Chandipur, The Vanishing Sea

Chandipur also known as Chandipur-on-sea, is the wonderful sea side resort of Balasore. It is in Chandipur that the sea recedes back everyday around 1 to 4kms during the ebb tide. Due to the unique circumstances, the beach supports a rich bio-diversity of various types of Crabs, noticeable among them is the Horseshoe crab. Balaramgadi is the nearby fishing market and fishing community at the confluence of the Budhabalanga River. Every evening 100’s of Trawlers leave Balaramgadi for fishing and return back the next day.

Chandipur can be reached by travelling up to Baleswar by rail or road and then thereafter catching a bus, auto or taxi. Road access to Baleswar is via National Highway 5 (NH-5).

Chandipur Bali Jatra

Bali Yatra is a hugely popular festival held of Odisha, and it relates to the glorious past of Odisha when the traders called Sadhabas (Oriya mariners) undertook voyages, along the sea trade route, on huge boats called Boita to distant lands of Bali, as well as Java, Sumatra, Borneo (all in Indonesia), and Sri Lanka for trade and cultural expansion.

The festival marks its beginning at Kartik Purnima which comes around the end of October and November, and goes on for a period of seven days from the full moon. This is the specific time that was considered auspicious by the Sadhabas to begin their voyage in vessels called Boitas. The voyage is begun on Kartika Purnima to take advantage of the favorable wind blowing during this time. Ajhala or big fabric sails were used to harness the wind power to move the Boitas.
